#10 OR We are still chatting.

　2015年に結成されたSabbatical Company （以下サバカン）は、結成当初、『言葉になる手前の時間を共に過ごそう』というスローガンのもと、「今はまだ、自分達のやっていこうとしていることに名前をつけるのはよそう。そして10年経ったら一度この活動を振り返り、そこから生まれた言葉をまとめてみよう。」と決めました。現在まで9つのプロジェクトを行い、そこから発生してくる言葉を１つ１つ拾いながら思考することを試み、結成から6年という時間が流れました。約束の10年まではあと4年弱。その時間を私達は、意味づけすることをなんとか引き延ばし、また意味付けられることをなんとか躱しながら活動を続けようとしています。

　サバカンは現在、来るべき2025年に向かって、自分たちの活動のあり方を思考し始めています。今回の展覧会は、この状況における現在地を示そうと、2017年のプロジェクトでのコラボレーターであった、野内俊裕氏を再び迎え、私たちの言葉探しの時間を、音楽の力を借りて届けようとプロジェクトを新たに立ち上げました。

　「OR」この言葉は、サバカンの活動の、ある種の可能性を示すキーワードとして、結成当初から常に存在してきました。2016年のプロジェクト、「OR Have a good day.」では、共に同じ場所で過ごすことに対する、もう一方の可能性として提示され、「一緒にいられないけど、どうかよい 1 日を」という思いが込められていました。その予感通り、この年からメンバーのうち3名が、時期をずらし国内外への滞在を行い、2019年まで、文字通り離れた場所から活動が続けられてきました。そして2020年以降、久しぶりに距離を近く暮らす中で起こった世界的パンデミック。サバカンは、多くの人々が実践するのと同様に、改めて共に過ごすこと、その距離について問う日々を過ごしています。私たちは自分達に独自に与えたあと4年弱という時間を、ゆっくりと、そして有効に使うため、言葉のあり方を思考し始めた中でのゆらぎや迷いを、再び「OR」のキーワードに回帰させました。

Sabbatical Company のミーティングはいつも取り止めもないおしゃべりが大半を占めています。その日の議題はいつしか忘れ去られ、最近見つけた面白いこと、美味しいもの、いろいろな噂話などでひとしきり笑い合った次の瞬間、新しい発見が生まれることもしばしば起こります。私たちにとっては全てのおしゃべりが大事な発見につながる道標です。見過ごして忘れてしまいそうな言葉を大事に拾い上げる。そして、もう一度じっくりと眺めてみる。引き伸ばされた時間はそれを可能にしてくれるように思います。「OR OR OR OR……」と結論を先延ばしにしながら私達はまだおしゃべりを続けています。

Sabbatical Company (hereafter "Sabakan") was formed in 2015 under the slogan "Let's spend time together before we become words. " We decided that "Let's not put a name to what we are trying to do just yet." We have conducted nine projects for now and have tried to think about each of the words that have emerged from these projects, picking them up one by one. Less than four years remain until the promised ten years. During that time, we are trying to continue our activities, somehow prolonging what we can mean and somehow avoiding what we can put meaning.

　Sabakan is now considering how we should conduct our activities in 2025. To show our current position in this situation, we have welcomed Toshihiro Yanai, our collaborator in the 2017 project, for this exhibition. We have launched a new project to deliver our time searching for words with the help of music.

　The word "OR" has always been present in Sabakan's work since its inception as a keyword for particular possibilities, and in the 2016 project "OR Have a good day." it was presented as another possibility for spending time together in the same place, and was used as a way of saying "We can't be together, but please have a good day." True to the premonition, three members have been staying abroad at different times since that year, and our projects continued from literally far away from each other until 2019. Then, after 2020, a global pandemic occurred as we lived closer to each other for the first time in many years. To slow down and make more nearly four years we have uniquely given ourselves, we have once again returned to the keyword "OR" for the fluctuations and hesitations we have experienced as we began to think about the nature of our language. Like many of us do it, Sabakan spends our days questioning once again our time together and the distance between us.

Sabbatical Company meetings are always dominated by incessant chatter. The day's agenda is forgotten, and often a discovery is made one moment, followed by a good laugh over a recent discovery, a tasty treat, or a gossipy tale. For us, every chat is a signpost to an important discovery. We carefully pick up words that we might otherwise overlook and forget. And then we take a closer look at them again. Stretched time seems to make this possible. "OR OR OR OR......" We are still chattering, postponing our conclusions.
